Collagen peptides: dosage in studies

Collagen peptides, or collagen hydrolysate, have been studied by mouth in trials on skin, knee osteoarthritis and bone density. Daily amounts in the table were 2.5-10 g, and use lasted from 8 weeks to 12 months [1, 2, 3]A.
Doses used in studies
| Study | Participants | Dose | Frequency | Duration | Source and level |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Proksch 2014, 2.5 g | 69 women aged 35-55 (23 in each group) | 2.5 g of collagen hydrolysate by mouth | Once a day | 8 weeks | [1]A |
| Proksch 2014, 5 g | 69 women aged 35-55 (23 in each group) | 5 g of collagen hydrolysate by mouth | Once a day | 8 weeks | [1]A |
| Benito-Ruiz 2009 | 250 people with knee osteoarthritis | 10 g of collagen hydrolysate by mouth | Daily | 6 months | [2]A |
| König 2018 | 131 postmenopausal women with reduced bone density | 5 g of collagen peptides by mouth | Daily | 12 months | [3]A |
Evidence levels: A = randomised human trial or meta-analysis · B = observational human study or case series · C = animal study · D = cell or laboratory study · E = not peer-reviewed
Notes
The skin trial used 2.5 or 5 g a day, the bone trial 5 g and the osteoarthritis trial 10 g [1, 2, 3]A.
Of the 131 women in the bone density trial, 102 completed it [3]A.
What points the other way or is uncertain
In a meta-analysis of 23 randomised trials, collagen supplements improved skin only in trials funded by pharmaceutical companies and in low-quality trials. High-quality trials and trials without industry funding showed no effect on hydration, elasticity or wrinkles [4]A.
In a meta-analysis on knee osteoarthritis pain, pain eased more than with placebo, but all four included trials had a high risk of bias [5]A.
