What does a weight-loss drug cost in Finland and how do you get one? Wegovy, Mounjaro and Saxenda
What is a weight-loss drug? What this guide covers
We mean medicines with an EU marketing authorisation for weight management: Wegovy (semaglutide), Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) [16, 17, 18]. In addition, the EU authorised the liraglutide product Ablymico for weight management on 15 Jul 2026 [49], but it was not in Kela's medicines search on 13 Oct 2026 [3], so it was not yet sold in Finnish pharmacies. Ozempic contains the same active substance as Wegovy, but its indication is type 2 diabetes, and Kela reimburses it only for diabetes [11, 12]. We also include Mysimba, which is not a GLP-1 drug but is the other obesity medicine Kela reimburses [10].
This guide does not cover powders or pens sold "for research use". They are not medicines that may be sold in Finland, and their risks have their own section below [28, 30].

How do GLP-1 drugs work on weight?
Semaglutide and liraglutide act like the gut hormone GLP-1: they increase fullness and reduce hunger. Tirzepatide also acts on the receptor of a second gut hormone, GIP [16, 17, 18]. All three are authorised as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, not instead of them [16, 17, 18].

Approved products, which is which, and pharmacy prices in Finland (October 2026)
Prices are from Kela's medicines search (updated 1 Oct 2026, read 13 Oct 2026). A prescription medicine costs the same in every Finnish pharmacy, and the pharmacy adds a delivery fee of EUR 2.46 to each prescription purchase [6]. Prices can change on the 1st and 15th of the month [6]. The table shows the marketing authorisation holder's own packs; parallel-import packs were also listed, some marked "being withdrawn" [1, 2].
A Wegovy or Mounjaro pen holds four weekly doses, so four weeks of medicine. A Saxenda pack has five pens, 90 mg in total; at the maintenance dose of 3.0 mg a day in the product information it lasts 30 days [3, 18].

euroClinix or a Finnish pharmacy: what does a month cost?
euroClinix is a foreign online service whose Finnish-language site sells the same products after an online consultation. The prices are from the site's own price selectors (read 14 Oct 2026): every strength has its own price, and the price includes the consultation, the prescription and delivery [26, 52, 53, 54]. The table compares the price of one month's pack at euroClinix and in a Finnish pharmacy. The Finnish figure includes the pharmacy's delivery fee but not a doctor's visit; visit prices are in the routes table further down.

| Mysimba 8/90 mg, 1 month | EUR 169.95 [54] | EUR 107.92 [5, 6] | +EUR 62.03 | +57.5% |
Formula: Finland = Kela pharmacy price + EUR 2.46 delivery fee [6]; the euroClinix price includes the consultation, the prescription and delivery. Difference (EUR) = euroClinix - Finland. Difference (%) = difference (EUR) ÷ Finland × 100. A month = one sales pack: a Wegovy or Mounjaro pen (four weekly doses), a Saxenda pack of five pens (30 days at the maintenance dose [18]) and a one-month Mysimba pack (the euroClinix product image shows 112 tablets, as does Kela's pack [5, 54]). The Finnish figures include no doctor's visit and no Kela reimbursement. Prices can change.
- When a prescription already exists, for example from a health centre or occupational health, the Finnish pharmacy is cheaper on every row of the table: the euroClinix price is 19.2-120.6% higher. The gap is largest for Saxenda (+120.6%) and smallest for the high Mounjaro strengths (+19.2%).
- If you have to pay for a private doctor's visit in Finland, the comparison changes for the first month. The Difference (EUR) column is the visit fee above which the first month at euroClinix is cheaper. With the EUR 99 first visit at iLääkärit [25], the first month at euroClinix is cheaper for Mounjaro 12.5 and 15 mg and Mysimba; with a Pihlajalinna GP visit that costs from EUR 134.90 with fees [22], for Wegovy 0.25 mg, Wegovy 0.5 mg, Mounjaro 7.5 and 10 mg, Mounjaro 12.5 and 15 mg and Mysimba. On the other rows the Finnish route is cheaper even with the visit fee. A visit is a one-off fee, so in later months the difference is the one in the table; follow-up can cost extra (iLääkärit EUR 24.90/month [25]).
- euroClinix sells some packs more cheaply when several are bought at once: Wegovy 2.4 mg two pens EUR 779.95 (EUR 389.98 a month), Mounjaro 5 mg two pens EUR 849.95 (EUR 424.98) and a three-month Mysimba pack EUR 429.95 (EUR 143.32 a month) [26, 52, 54]. These are also higher than the Finnish pharmacy price: +65.7%, +47.7% and +32.8%.
- In Finland Saxenda and Mysimba can get Kela reimbursement (40%, under conditions) [9, 10]; Kela's direct reimbursement is not available through euroClinix [47].
- Is ordering legal? According to Kela's EU contact point, a prescription medicine may be ordered by post from another EU or EEA country with a valid prescription, up to three months' supply, when the supplier is legal and the product is authorised in that country [50]. Medicines bought online or by post from abroad are not reimbursed by health insurance [50], and the euroClinix prescription is not stored in Kanta (Finland's national e-prescription and health record service) [47]. Checking that the supplier is legal is up to the buyer [50].
- euroClinix also lists Rybelsus tablets (30 tablets: 1.5 mg EUR 209.95, 4 mg EUR 229.95 and 9 mg EUR 249.95 [55]) and orlistat (Xenical, 84 capsules for 4 weeks EUR 134.95 [56]). In Finland Rybelsus is reimbursed only for diabetes [11, 12], and this page has no Finnish prices for them, so they are not in the table. Wegovy tablets were marked out of stock with no price [57], and the euroClinix page does not list Wegovy 7.2 mg [26].
- The comparison shows prices only. It is not a recommendation to buy anything and not dosing advice: a doctor assesses suitability and chooses the product and strength, and a prescription is needed on both routes. The euroClinix prices were read without a consultation, and approval of a request is not guaranteed [26].
How much does treatment cost per month and per year?
The cost depends on the strength at which the doctor continues treatment. Treatment always starts at the lowest strength, and the dose is raised on the schedule in the product information: Wegovy every four weeks from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg, Mounjaro from 2.5 mg to 5 mg and if needed in 2.5 mg steps, Saxenda weekly from 0.6 mg to 3.0 mg a day [16, 17, 18]. The dose is decided by the doctor; here the schedule is used only to know which packs are bought in the first year.
First-year (52 weeks) pharmacy cost including delivery fees, without Kela reimbursement: Wegovy with 2.4 mg maintenance EUR 2,868.86, Mounjaro with 5 mg maintenance EUR 3,669.84, 10 mg EUR 4,854.98 and 15 mg EUR 5,824.55, Saxenda EUR 2,175.36. The figures are calculated from Kela's prices and include 13 or 12 purchases; if you buy several packs at once the delivery fee is charged only once, so the total is slightly lower [1, 2, 3, 6].
With Kela reimbursement right 3051 for Saxenda (3051 is Kela's code for liraglutide reimbursement in obesity), the first-year own share is EUR 651.12 by our calculation, because basic reimbursement is 40%, the initial deductible EUR 70.33 and the 2026 annual cap EUR 636.12; after the cap each purchase costs EUR 2.50 [7, 9]. The calculation assumes no other reimbursed medicines are bought in the same year.
Monthly cost calculator
The calculator uses pharmacy prices from Kela's medicines search (updated 1 Oct 2026). It does not recommend a dose: the dose is decided by the doctor.
| Packs (whole packs) | - |
|---|---|
| Paid at the pharmacy in a year (includes the delivery fee) | - |
| Average per month | - |
| Your share after Kela reimbursement | - |
A Saxenda pack has 5 pens (90 mg in total).
Assumptions: delivery fee EUR 2.46 per purchase, one pack at a time (buying several packs at once, the fee is charged only once). The Kela figure assumes the initial deductible (EUR 70.33) and the annual cap (EUR 636.12) start from zero and no other reimbursed medicines are bought that year. Once the cap is reached you pay EUR 2.50 per purchase.
Kela reimbursement: for whom and on what conditions?
For obesity in 2026, Kela reimburses only two medicines: liraglutide (Saxenda) and the bupropion and naltrexone combination (Mysimba). Both have restricted basic reimbursement: 40%, and only with a reimbursement right granted on the basis of a doctor's B statement (a medical certificate written for Kela) [7, 8, 9, 10].
Hila rejected the reimbursement applications for Wegovy pens on 14 Apr 2026 and for Mounjaro pens on 8 Oct 2026 [13, 14]. According to Kela, semaglutide is reimbursed only for type 2 diabetes, and in 2025, 93% of spending on obesity medicines was paid by patients themselves [15].
- Saxenda, right 3051 (adults; separate conditions for ages 12-17 [9]): at treatment start a BMI of at least 35 kg/m², prediabetes (fasting glucose 6.1-6.9 mmol/l, 2-hour glucose tolerance value 7.8-11.0 mmol/l or HbA1c 43-47 mmol/mol) and drug treatment for high blood pressure or dyslipidaemia [9].
- Saxenda reimbursement is first granted for six months. Continuation requires weight loss of at least 5% from baseline after 12 weeks on the maintenance dose, and later that weight stays at least 5% below baseline; each continuation is for at most two years [9].
- Mysimba, right 3055: BMI of at least 40 kg/m², or at least 35 kg/m² with drug treatment for type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia or high blood pressure [10].
- Ozempic and Rybelsus (semaglutide): reimbursed only for difficult-to-treat type 2 diabetes with a BMI of at least 30 kg/m² when other diabetes medicines have not been enough (rights 285 and 346) [11, 12].
- The reimbursement right is applied for with a doctor's B or BC statement; no separate application is needed [8]. At private providers the statement costs, for example, EUR 75 with a visit at Painoklinikka and from EUR 111 at Pihlajalinna [22, 24].

Who can be prescribed a weight-loss drug?
According to the product information, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Saxenda are authorised for adults with a BMI of at least 30 kg/m² at the start of treatment, or 27-30 kg/m² with at least one weight-related condition, for example prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia or sleep apnoea [16, 17, 18]. Wegovy and Saxenda are also authorised for adolescents from 12 years with obesity and body weight above 60 kg; Saxenda also for children aged 6-11 under conditions [16, 18]. Mounjaro is not authorised for weight management under 18 [17].
The Finnish Current Care guideline (targeted update 17 Apr 2025) sets almost the same limits: medication on top of lifestyle treatment is possible at a BMI of 30 kg/m² or more, or at least 27 kg/m² with central obesity or a related condition. According to the guideline, lifestyle treatment comes first in every weight class, and drug treatment can be given in primary care [19].
The Kela reimbursement threshold is stricter than the treatment threshold: Saxenda reimbursement requires a BMI of at least 35 kg/m² plus the other conditions [9]. Many people therefore get a prescription but pay for the medicine themselves.
Routes to a prescription: own doctor, occupational health, private and remote
A medicine can be prescribed by a doctor who has established the need for it through their own examination or another reliable way; injectable medicines are prescription medicines [31]. According to Kela, 62% of obesity medicine prescriptions in 2025 were written in the private sector [15].
The prices below are from the providers' own pages on 13 Oct 2026. They are visit prices, and the medicine is paid separately at the pharmacy. The exception is the last row: a foreign online service that sells the medicine together with an online consultation. The clinics are listed for information, not as a recommendation. We have no commercial relationship with the Finnish clinics; the euroClinix links are partner links that may earn the site a commission.

(Netherlands) [47]. The prescription is written by the service's own doctors (an "EEA prescription" on the site), not a Finnish e-prescription stored in Kanta, and Kela reimbursement is not applied directly [47] | The price includes the consultation, the prescription and delivery; for example Wegovy 0.25 mg EUR 299.95, Mounjaro 2.5 mg EUR 379.95, Saxenda EUR 399.95 and Mysimba EUR 169.95 for a month. A strength-by-strength comparison with Finnish pharmacy prices is in the section "euroClinix or a Finnish pharmacy" [26, 52, 53, 54] |
Where to fill the prescription
- Pharmacy: the pharmacy dispenses the medicine on an e-prescription and applies Kela reimbursement directly if you have the right. The pharmacy does not prescribe [6, 7].
- Estonia and other EU countries: with a Finnish e-prescription you can buy medicines in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, Croatia, Portugal and parts of Spain; no separate consent is needed any more, but the prescription must not carry a data-sharing ban. A foreign pharmacy cannot apply Kela reimbursement directly (you can claim it afterwards), and a specific product is not guaranteed [29, 48].
Benefits: what research shows about weight, and what to expect
In large randomised trials in which the medicine was combined with lifestyle counselling, mean weight fell: semaglutide 2.4 mg 14.9% (placebo 2.4%) over 68 weeks [35]A, tirzepatide 15.0-20.9% depending on dose (placebo 3.1%) over 72 weeks [36]A and liraglutide 3.0 mg 8.4 kg (placebo 2.8 kg) over 56 weeks [37]A. These are group averages; individual differences are large [15].
Treatment is usually long term, which shows in the cost. In the STEP 1 extension about two thirds of the weight lost came back within a year of stopping semaglutide [38]B, and in SURMOUNT-4 those switched to placebo regained 14.0% over 52 weeks [39]A. According to Kela, a lasting result requires long-term, even permanent use [15].

Lifestyle, diet and exercise alongside the medicine
All three medicines are authorised to support a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity [16, 17, 18], and Current Care treats lifestyle treatment as first-line in every weight class [19]. Kela notes that obesity drug treatment always needs lifestyle treatment and regular follow-up alongside it [15]. The total cost therefore includes follow-up visits, not only the medicine.
Side effects and risks
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal. According to the Wegovy product information, in the 68-week trial nausea occurred in 43.9% of people on semaglutide and 16.1% on placebo; most symptoms were mild to moderate and short-lived [16].
The product information also warns about dehydration with vomiting or diarrhoea, acute pancreatitis, an optic nerve circulation disorder (NAION) and stomach contents entering the lungs during anaesthesia [16]. Semaglutide must not be used during pregnancy and is stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy [16]. Read the package leaflet of your own product.

Illegal and risky routes: without a prescription, from Estonia, online and counterfeit pens
Without a prescription: Wegovy, Mounjaro and Saxenda are prescription medicines throughout the EU [16, 17, 18]. Fimea reminds that medicines should be obtained only from a pharmacy or a legal online pharmacy, not from private individuals, social media or illegal websites [31].
Online and from abroad: under the Finnish Medicines Act a private person may import medicinal products for personal use only from a supplier entitled to retail distribution, a prescription medicine only with a prescription, and importing active substances is not allowed [28]. A powder sold "for research use" is an active substance, not an authorised product. Legal Finnish online pharmacies are on Fimea's list, and legal EU online pharmacies carry the common EU logo, which links to their own country's regulator list [28, 31]. Medicines may be ordered by post only from another EU or EEA country and only up to three months' supply; ordering by post from outside the EEA is prohibited, and medicines bought by post from abroad are not reimbursed by health insurance [50]. When travelling, you may bring for personal use up to one year's supply from an EEA country and up to three months' supply from elsewhere [51].
From Estonia: the legal route is a Finnish e-prescription at an Estonian pharmacy [29]. Under the Medicines Act, a prescription medicine bought without a prescription in Estonia or elsewhere may not be brought into Finland [28].
Counterfeits: an investigation by Finnish Customs and Fimea led in June 2026 to the discovery of an illegal medicines factory in Greece. It made weight-loss medicines among others, some of them counterfeits imitating brands, sold online to 90 countries [32]. Fimea warned on 29 Jun 2026 about injectable peptides bought online and on 3 Sep 2026 about illegal injectable medicines [30, 31].
What can happen: in a Swiss case report a young woman was hospitalised with prolonged nausea and vomiting after four injections of a product said to contain unapproved retatrutide, given by a wellness coach without medical training [33]B. In October 2026 JAMA described the online trade in unapproved GLP-1 agents such as retatrutide and its risks [34]E, not peer-reviewed.

Sport and doping
The WADA 2026 Prohibited List does not name authorised GLP-1 medicines, and their status does not change on the 2027 list [44, 45]. Class S0 bans substances with no approval by any regulatory authority for human use; it also covers unapproved substances still in development [44].
Shortages
According to the EMA shortages catalogue, the EU-level Ozempic shortage has been resolved (updated 13 Jan 2026), as has the Saxenda shortage (updated 2 Sep 2026); the Victoza shortage was still marked ongoing [43]. Current availability in Finland is shown in Fimea's medicines search. On Kela's list several parallel-import packs were marked "being withdrawn" [1, 2].
Is the situation changing? Orforglipron and new products
Orforglipron is a once-daily tablet. The US FDA approved it on 1 Apr 2026 as Foundayo [41], and the UK MHRA on 10 Aug 2026 as the first in Europe [42]. In the EU, EMA's evaluation started on 22 Jan 2026 and restarted on 20 Jul 2026, and there was no marketing authorisation on 5 Oct 2026 [40]. So orforglipron is not available as an authorised product in Finnish pharmacies.
Wegovy is also authorised in the EU as a tablet [16], but the tablet was not in Kela's medicines search on 13 Oct 2026 [4]. Wegovy's highest strength, 7.2 mg, is on sale in Finland [1]; according to the product information it can be used in adults with a BMI of at least 30 at treatment start, after at least four weeks on 2.4 mg [16]. EMA is also evaluating three generic or hybrid semaglutide applications, one of them for weight management [40]. On reimbursement, Hila rejected both the Wegovy and the Mounjaro applications in 2026 [13, 14].

FAQ
How much does Wegovy cost per month in Finland?
At 1 Oct 2026 prices, a four-week pack costs EUR 178.91 at 0.25-1 mg, EUR 204.05 at 1.7 mg and EUR 232.90 at the 2.4 mg maintenance strength, plus a delivery fee of EUR 2.46 per purchase [1, 6]. The first year costs EUR 2,868.86 by our calculation.
How much does Mounjaro cost per month?
A four-week pen costs EUR 213.54 (2.5 mg), EUR 285.36 (5 mg), EUR 393.10 (7.5 and 10 mg) and EUR 500.83 (12.5 and 15 mg) [2]. Kela does not reimburse it: Hila rejected the application for the 2.5-12.5 mg pens on 8 Oct 2026 [14], and the 15 mg pen is not reimbursable either [2].
Does Kela reimburse Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Not for obesity. Hila rejected the Wegovy reimbursement application on 14 Apr 2026 and the Mounjaro one on 8 Oct 2026 [13, 14]. For obesity Kela reimburses only Saxenda and Mysimba, under strict conditions [9, 10].
What are the conditions for Kela reimbursement of Saxenda?
For adults a BMI of at least 35, prediabetes and medication for high blood pressure or dyslipidaemia. Reimbursement is 40%, first for six months, and continuation requires at least 5% weight loss [9].
Is euroClinix cheaper than a Finnish pharmacy?
Not on the monthly price: the euroClinix price is 19.2-120.6% higher than the Finnish pharmacy price including the delivery fee (for example Wegovy 2.4 mg EUR 449.95 vs EUR 235.36) [26, 52, 53, 54, 1, 2, 3, 6]. The euroClinix price does include the consultation, the prescription and delivery, whereas in Finland the doctor's visit is paid separately; with a paid visit the first month at euroClinix is cheaper on only some of the rows. The doctor always decides the product and strength.
Who can prescribe a weight-loss drug?
Any doctor who has established the need: health centre, occupational health, private clinic or remote appointment [19, 31]. The product-information threshold is a BMI of 30, or 27 with a weight-related condition [16, 17, 18].
Can you buy Mounjaro or Wegovy without a prescription?
Not legally. They are prescription medicines in the EU [16, 17], and according to Fimea medicines should be obtained only from a pharmacy or a legal online pharmacy [31]. Products sold without a prescription come with no guarantee of content, and counterfeits have been found [32].
Can you buy a weight-loss drug in Estonia?
With a Finnish e-prescription, yes, unless the prescription carries a data-sharing ban; a foreign pharmacy cannot apply Kela reimbursement directly, but you can claim it afterwards [29, 48]. Under the Medicines Act, a prescription medicine bought without a prescription may not be brought into Finland [28].
Is it a good idea to order a weight-loss drug online?
The only legal way is ordering with a prescription from a supplier entitled to retail distribution, and importing active substances ("for research use") is not allowed [28]. In 2026 an investigation by Customs and Fimea led to the discovery of an illegal factory that also sold counterfeit weight-loss medicines online [32].
What happens if you stop treatment?
In trials weight went up after stopping: in the STEP 1 extension about two thirds of the weight lost came back within a year [38], and in SURMOUNT-4 those switched to placebo regained 14.0% over 52 weeks [39]. That is why the cost is worth calculating in years, not months [15].
Is orforglipron available in Finland?
No. The FDA approved it on 1 Apr 2026 and the MHRA on 10 Aug 2026, but in the EU the EMA evaluation was still ongoing on 5 Oct 2026 [40, 41, 42].
Is semaglutide a peptide made of amino acids, or a protein?
Semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide are peptides, short chains of amino acids that resemble the body's own gut hormones [16, 17, 18]. Orforglipron, by contrast, is a small molecule, not a peptide [46].
How much does a doctor's visit cost?
Privately, a 20-minute GP visit cost EUR 102.60-224.10 at Terveystalo and from EUR 96 plus service, Kanta and e-prescription fees at Pihlajalinna (from EUR 134.90 in total); a remote visit for example EUR 99 at iLääkärit and EUR 116.50-130.50 at Painoklinikka (13 Oct 2026) [20, 22, 24, 25].
