Epitalon (Epithalon, AEDG): research, side effects and dosage in studies
In short
Epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide (AEDG) studied mainly in cells and animals within one St Petersburg research network [3]. It has no marketing authorisation, and longer life or telomere lengthening has not been shown in humans [4]C [13]regulator.
- In cell cultures epitalon lengthened telomeres [5, 6]D, but in a mouse study it did not extend average lifespan [4]C.
- Human studies that followed mortality used the bovine pineal extract epithalamin, not epitalon [7, 8]A.
- Most studies come from the same research network, and the FDA has found no safety information on the substance for the proposed route of administration [2]regulator [3].
- Epitalon is listed in Annex 1 A of Fimea's medicines list [11]regulator, whose substances are always treated like prescription-only medicines. Fimea warns against injectable peptides bought online [1]regulator.
What is epitalon?
Epitalon (also Epithalon) is the four-amino-acid peptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, abbreviated AEDG. It was made on the basis of the amino acid composition of epithalamin, an extract of bovine pineal gland. It has later been reported to occur in the pineal polypeptide complex as well [3].
Epitalon has been offered on the market in product form. In an analysis by a Belgian laboratory, epitalon was identified in two illegal pharmaceutical preparations [3] [10]D. Basics: What are peptides?. All substances: Peptides A-Z.

What is epitalon studied for?
Epitalon is studied mainly for ageing. No use is approved [13, 15]regulator.
- Telomeres and ageing: cell studies [5, 6]D and a mouse study [4]C, see Promising, but only in animal and cell studies.
- Inherited retinal degeneration: one human study without a placebo group [3] [9]B.
- Melatonin: one human study in women (as described in the review) [3].
Claims online. The claim that it extends human life is not based on epitalon studies: in mice average lifespan did not increase [4]C, and in humans mortality was followed with the epithalamin extract [7, 8]A. According to a review, non-approved peptides have promising preclinical but only limited clinical evidence [14].
How does epitalon work?
How epitalon works is not known. According to a review, the mechanism of action of epitalon remains unclear [3].
In cell cultures epitalon increased the activity of the enzyme telomerase and lengthened telomeres [5]D. In breast cancer cell lines the lengthening happened through another pathway (ALT) [6]D. Cell culture results do not show what the substance does in humans.
Has epitalon been studied in humans?
Little: we found two human studies with epitalon, and as far as we know neither has been repeated by another research group [3] [9]B. The human studies that followed mortality used the epithalamin extract [7, 8]A.
Studies with epitalon
- Retinal degeneration (2002). At the St Petersburg institute, 162 patients with inherited retinal degeneration (retinitis pigmentosa) received epitalon, and controls received conventional treatment. Visual acuity of treated patients improved by 0.15-0.20 on average [3]. On the decimal scale, where normal vision is 1.0, that would mean for example a change from 0.5 to about 0.7. The review cites a publication whose abstract reports a positive effect in 90% of cases [3] [9]B.
- Melatonin. In a study of 75 women, epitalon taken under the tongue increased urinary excretion of a melatonin metabolite 1.6-fold compared with placebo [3].
- Telomeres in white blood cells. In isolated white blood cells the results varied between people: some showed no change, telomeres lengthened in one person and shortened in another [3].
The pineal extract epithalamin (not epitalon)
- 266 older people, 6-8 years. Mortality among those given epithalamin was 1.6-1.8 times lower than in controls [7]A.
- Coronary patients, 12 years. In a randomised study of older patients with coronary disease, 28% fewer people died in the epithalamin group than among controls [8]A.
These studies concern the pineal extract, not epitalon, and they come from the same research network [7, 8]A. Their results cannot be transferred to epitalon.
Promising, but only in animal and cell studies
These findings look interesting, but they have not been shown in humans [2]regulator [3]. Results from animal and cell studies cannot be transferred to humans, and they say nothing about the effects of a product sold online, because an unauthorised product may contain a different substance than the packaging states [1]regulator.
-
Telomeres no human studies
In a 2003 study, epitalon increased telomerase activity in human fetal fibroblasts and lengthened telomeres [5]D. In a 2025 cell study by a London group, epitalon lengthened telomeres in a dose-dependent way in normal cells and also in two breast cancer cell lines [6]D.
If it held in humans: cell ageing could be slowed.
Why it might not translate: the result comes from cell cultures, and in isolated human white blood cells the results varied between people [3]. Telomeres also lengthened in cancer cells, and it is not known what that means [6]D.
Evidence now: two cell studies, one of them from a group other than the St Petersburg one [5, 6]. Not shown in the human body [3].
-
Lifespan and tumours no human studies
In a mouse study, 54 mice per group received either saline or epitalon under the skin on five consecutive days each month for their whole lives. Average lifespan did not change, but the lifespan of the longest-lived tenth was 13.3% longer and the maximum lifespan 12.3% longer than in controls. Total tumour incidence did not change, but leukaemia was less common [4]C.
If it held in humans: some people could live longer and get leukaemia less often.
Why it might not translate: average lifespan did not increase even in mice, and the study comes from the same research network as the other positive results [3] [4]C.
Evidence now: one mouse study [4]. No human study with epitalon [2]regulator.
Who studies epitalon?
Research on epithalamin, the extract epitalon is based on, was led from the start mainly by V. K. Khavinson and V. N. Anisimov [3]. Most of the epitalon studies we found were carried out at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology or within its collaboration network [4, 5] [9]B. We found one cell study from another group, in London, but no independent human studies [6]D.

What are the side effects of epitalon?
There are no systematic data on the harms of epitalon in humans. The FDA has not identified safety-related information on the substance for the proposed route of administration, and it lacks sufficient information to know whether the substance would cause harm in humans [2]regulator.
What users report. In the Reddit accounts we compiled (not research), 22 of 57 people (39%) reported some harm, most often: insomnia or worse sleep (10, 18%), fatigue (4, 7%) and low mood or anxiety (2, 4%). People tend to post when something goes wrong, so this share does not tell how common harms are. 34 of 57 people (60%) used other substances at the same time, most often retatrutide (12), BPC-157 (10) and TB-500 (10). So the figures describe use that included epitalon, not epitalon on its own. The accounts say nothing about telomeres or lifespan. The harms in detail: Epitalon user experiences.
Risks in products
The FDA says products containing epitalon may carry a risk of immune reactions by certain routes of administration, because the peptide can aggregate and products may contain peptide-related impurities [2]regulator.
According to Fimea, impurities such as endotoxins in injectable products raise the risk of serious health hazards [1]regulator.
What is known from studies
In the retinal study, none of the patients given epitalon reported side effects. The study had no placebo group, so the assessment of harms is uncertain [3]. According to a review, non-approved peptides lack long-term safety data [14]. More: Side effects and safety.
Interactions and who lacks data
Because there is no safety information [2]regulator, nothing is known about interactions with other medicines in humans. For the same reason there are no data for pregnancy, breastfeeding, children or people with long-term illnesses. Telomere lengthening in breast cancer cells is a cell study finding whose meaning for people with cancer is unknown [6]D.
What speaks against it and what is unknown
The evidence comes mostly from cell and animal experiments, and most of it from one research network [3] [4]C.
Contrary evidence
- In the mouse study epitalon did not affect average lifespan or total tumour incidence [4]C.
- In isolated white blood cells, telomeres did not change in some people, lengthened in one and shortened in another [3].
- Telomeres also lengthened in breast cancer cell lines [6]D.
What the evidence does not support
- "Epitalon extends lifespan": this has not been shown in humans, and in mice average lifespan did not increase [4]C. In humans mortality was followed with the epithalamin extract [7, 8]A.
- "Epitalon lengthens telomeres in the human body": lengthening has been measured in cell cultures [5, 6]D, not in the human body [3].
- "Epitalon and epithalamin are the same substance": they are not. Epithalamin is a bovine pineal extract, and epitalon is a synthetic peptide made on its basis [3].
- "There is a lot of research on epitalon, so it is well studied": most studies are cell and animal experiments from the same research network [3] [4]C [5]D, and the FDA has found no safety information [2]regulator.
It is not known whether epitalon is safe for humans [2]regulator, whether the results hold up in other research groups [6]D, or what long-term use does [14].
Epitalon dosage in studies
Epitalon has no approved dosage, because it has no marketing authorisation [13]regulator. Below are the amounts used in studies. They are not recommendations.
| Study | Who | Dose and route | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retinal degeneration (2002) | 162 patients, controls on conventional treatment | 5.0 µg per eye as an injection beside the eye | 10 consecutive days [3] [9]B |
| Melatonin | 75 women | 0.5 mg a day under the tongue | 20 days [3] |
| Lifespan (2003), animal study | mice, 54 per group | 1.0 µg per mouse (about 30-40 µg/kg) under the skin | 5 days a month for life [4]C |
What the numbers do not tell you. An animal dose does not transfer to humans, and the content of a product sold online is not known [1]regulator [4]C. More: epitalon doses in studies. The calculator has no epitalon preset.
Epitalon vs epithalamin: what is the difference?
They are different substances. Epithalamin is an extract made from bovine pineal gland, and epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide made on the basis of its amino acid composition [3].
- Human studies: the studies that followed mortality used epithalamin [7, 8]A. Epitalon has only two small human studies [3] [9]B.
- Researchers: both have been studied mainly within the same research network [3] [7, 8]A.
Situation in the United States
In the United States, the FDA page lists epitalon among substances that had been placed in compounding category 2 because of safety risks and whose nomination was later withdrawn by the nominator. The FDA risk assessment remains on the page (updated 22 Apr 2026) [2]regulator.
Is epitalon legal in Finland?
Epitalon is listed in Annex 1 A of Fimea's medicines list [11]regulator. Annex 1 A substances are controlled as medicines in Finland and are always treated like prescription-only medicines. Epitalon has no marketing authorisation [13]regulator.
- Medicines list. In the Finnish medicines list (230/2025), epitalon is named in annex 1 A, which covers medicinal substance analogues and prohormones classified as medicines [11]regulator.
- Marketing authorisation. On 12 Oct 2026 the EMA data on centrally authorised medicines contained no epitalon [13]regulator, and the EMA Article 57 database, which must list every human medicine authorised in the EU and EEA, had no epitalon product in any country (data as of 21 Sep 2026) [15]regulator.
- Fimea warning, 29 June 2026. Fimea warned about injectable peptides bought online and advises buying medicines only from legal pharmacies. According to Fimea, a "for research use only" label means the product is not intended for humans [1]regulator.
- Import. Ordering medicines from outside the EU is covered on Peptides and the law in Finland. Bringing them back from travel: Travelling with peptides.
This is not legal advice. Disclaimer.
Is epitalon doping?
Epitalon is not named on the Prohibited List. Class S0 of the WADA 2026 list prohibits at all times any pharmacological substance not covered by the other classes and with no current approval by any government health authority for human therapeutic use [12]regulator. Epitalon has no marketing authorisation in the EU or EEA [13, 15]regulator. Athletes should check with their national anti-doping organisation (in Finland, the Finnish Center for Integrity in Sports, SUEK).
How is an epitalon product assessed?
You cannot be sure what a product contains. According to Fimea, an unauthorised product may contain a different substance than the packaging states [1]regulator. A laboratory of the Belgian public health institute, analysing illegal epitalon preparations, considered the risk that a product might contain the same-sized peptide with a different order, Glu-Ala-Asp-Gly, and the two were told apart with certainty by heating the sample and analysing it with mass spectrometry [3] [10]D.
For epitalon the FDA points to peptide-related impurities and aggregation [2]regulator. A seller's own certificate of analysis (COA) does not by itself show that a product is pure or sterile. The analysis should be able to tell AEDG apart from a peptide made of the same amino acids in a different order [3] [10]D. More: How to read a COA and check a test result. Handling: Mixing and handling.
FAQ

A synthetic four-amino-acid peptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG), made on the basis of epithalamin, an extract of bovine pineal gland [3].
Does epitalon lengthen telomeres?
In cell cultures, yes [5, 6]D. This has not been shown in the human body, and in a mouse study average lifespan did not increase [4]C.
Does epitalon extend life?
This has not been shown. In mice average lifespan did not increase [4]C, and in humans mortality was followed with the epithalamin extract, not epitalon [7, 8]A.
Epitalon experiences: what do studies say?
There are few human studies. Most come from Khavinson's research network and either had no placebo group or used the epithalamin extract rather than epitalon [3] [7, 8]A [9]B.
What do users themselves report about epitalon?
In the Reddit accounts of 57 people we compiled (not research), 33 (58%) reported some benefit and 22 (39%) some harm. The accounts are self-selected and prove neither that it works nor that it is safe: Epitalon user experiences.
Epitalon side effects: what is known?
There are no systematic data. The FDA has found no safety information for the proposed route of administration and says products may carry a risk of immune reactions because of aggregation and impurities [2]regulator.
Epitalon dosage: is there a dose studied in humans?
There is no established dose. Amounts used in studies are under dosage in studies, and they are not meant as a recommendation [3] [4]C.
Epitalon in Finland: is it legal?
Epitalon is in Annex 1 A of the medicines list, whose substances are always treated like prescription-only medicines [11]regulator, and it has no marketing authorisation [13]regulator. Fimea warns against injectable peptides bought online [1]regulator. This is not legal advice.
Epitalon and doping: is it banned?
The Prohibited List does not name epitalon. Class S0 prohibits substances with no approval by any government health authority for human therapeutic use [12]regulator.
